As a former chef chef I had a cover letter template set up in my computer, so when I would go to an interview I would find out the name of the chef or person I was going to speak to, they like the personal touch, and the cover letter is enough, do not go on to much, but make it an introduction and brief history of your career, and as for references from a relative, sometimes working in a family business is unavoidable either to get experience or money to go to school, so it is best to use them no matter what.

I worked early in my career for 2 businesses run by family’s, a Greek one and Chinese one here in Canada, the whole family was involved, so it is not something you can help, just use the relative in the operation you know will give you the best reference, and make sure they know you are going to use them, a surprise call from an employer about you could be awkward for both you and the reference.

Gaps in your employment are sometimes a regular occurrence, but cover the dates or just use the years you worked there for the resume.

I have done my own for years, took classes, and I have had it done professionally 2 times, and got more calls from my version.
